For this SNHU project, I was provided with the margins, title, body copy, and author’s information. I then decided on the column number and structure, which resulted in six columns with a 0.25-inch gutter. I also chose the photo and typeface for this piece.
Planets Article
Rationale
The diction and syntax of this article reveal the academic nature of the target audience. This led me to choose Palatino Linotype for the typeface, because an academic audience will be the most familiar with serif typefaces. It is sophisticated but simple and therefore does not take away from the content.

The bold version of the typeface is used for every text element other than the body text to increase legibility and readability. Due to this, the visual hierarchy is mostly enforced by the size of the text and use of all caps.  The use of bold italics for the callouts helps them to stand out against the body text, as does their increase in size.  Italics were also used within the title for the word ‘Inhabited’ to provide emphasis regarding the content of the article.  These subtle variations help to guide the audience through the article, without being incredibly obvious or distracting. The use of the photo for the header also helps to distinguish between the title area and the text itself, preparing the audience for the shift in pace. The line in between the title and author’s information breaks up the information within the title, and this line does the same thing for the sub-header. These lines also help with the callouts, giving them something to lean on and distinguishing them from the rest of the body text.

The use of grids was incredibly important for this project due to the medium and vast amount of content. The margins and guides included three columns per page and 0.25-inch gutters.  The number of columns created an organized and elegant layout which is supported by the typeface choice and photo placement.
